Crisis Management
The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is one of Australia’s leading institutions, but also one of its most operationally complex. Located directly across from Sydney’s busiest train station, the university spans multiple buildings, entry points, and public-facing areas.
With dozens of internal departments, facilities teams, and contractors, UTS had amassed an intricate set of emergency procedures and crisis response plans. While individually thorough, these documents were hard to maintain, lacked consistency, and had grown unwieldy for those expected to lead during an event.
UTS needed a new approach, one that would protect students and staff while reducing operational burden.
Fixinc partnered with UTS to radically simplify and modernise their approach to resilience. Over the course of three years, we worked closely with Facilities, Campus Security, Property Services, and senior leadership to unify their crisis, emergency, and incident management processes.
We began with a full review of their existing documentation and stakeholder map, aligning this against UTS’s location-specific risk profile, one that includes infrastructure threats, transit disruption, public unrest, and severe weather risks.
We then delivered targeted services, including:
We tailored all training to reflect their exact facilities, threats, and team structures. We also supported the implementation of faster update cycles and validation reviews, ensuring plans stayed live and relevant.
UTS now operates with one of the most streamlined, clearly owned emergency and crisis frameworks in the sector. Their teams have moved from fragmented ownership to shared confidence and now run regular training and validation cycles as part of business as usual.
Plans are structured, language is simplified, and expectations are clear across departments. Students, staff, and leadership alike benefit from an approach that focuses on what matters most: fast, coordinated action and strong communication when it counts.
Fixinc would class UTS as one of the most mature organisations on the resilience spectrum we have had the pleasure of supporting.
UTS continues to partner with Fixinc to maintain and enhance this capability through our Maintenance Program, ensuring Sydney’s most visible campus remains one of its most prepared.
